Why use Glidr at Falls Creek
Falls Creek is the largest ski resort in Victoria, with 451 ha of skiable terrain served by 14 lifts. The entire village sits above 1500 m and is designed as a ski-in/ski-out resort — there are no roads through the accommodation area during the ski season, and almost every building has direct access onto the pistes. That layout makes Falls Creek one of the most practical resorts in Australia for a multi-day stay, since getting to the lifts in the morning requires no transport and no car park queue.
The terrain at Falls Creek is spread across two main areas linked by an on-mountain traverse. The main Village Bowl and Summit area hold the majority of the lifts and a mix of groomed blue and red runs on the open upper face. The International area, reached by a traverse from the main bowl, has more sheltered runs through subalpine woodland. The tree-lined runs on the International side are where navigation matters most — in snowfall or flat light the visibility between the trees can be low, and the paths between runs are not always obvious. Glidr's voice instructions at each junction mean you can follow your planned route through the trees without stopping to check the map.
Falls Creek is linked to Mt Hotham by a daily snow-bus service during the season. The two resorts share a combined lift pass for skiers who want to sample both mountains on a trip, and the bus runs once a day in each direction. Falls Creek and Mt Hotham are about 60 km apart by road but only around 10 km as the crow flies across the ranges. The Falls Creek terrain tends to be more suited to intermediate riders; Hotham has more advanced terrain on its north-facing descents.
The ski season at Falls Creek opens in mid-June. The resort has significant snowmaking infrastructure to supplement the natural base, and the upper lifts at the Rover and Summit areas typically open within the first week or two of the season. August is the month with the most consistent natural snowfall in the Victorian Alps, and early September can still bring good conditions before the shoulder-season warmth shortens the runs. Glidr's offline map downloads once and runs on GPS without mobile signal.
Glidr builds the Falls Creek piste map and routing from OpenStreetMap data on first download. Live open/closed status for lifts and runs is shown directly on the map at Falls Creek through Glidr's live-status overlay.
